Happy belated Valentine's Day

KATHRYN CHAVEZ: Happy belated Valentine's Day. Regardless of how you spent it or who you spent it with, I hope you at least got a present. My views regarding Valentine’s Day are complicated at best, but I think this tweet sums up my feelings about Cupid’s day best:

One of the joys of holidays are the varieties of posts, as political social media has no boundaries. Some of these Valentines posts read like teenagers gushing about their boyfriend of two months; others reminded us that love can last a lifetime. Here are some of the best and worst political Valentine's Day posts of 2022

Best: Half a century of live, laugh, love

Maryland Senator Ben Cardin won Valentine’s Day with this sweet post of him and his wife, who have been married since 1964. We all aspire to grow old with someone we love, and Cardin is doing just that. This post is a pleasant reminder that most relationships are not like the ones we see in the news, filled with weird Instagram edits, trucks loaded with roses, and all CAPS captions (Kim, Kanye, and Pete).

Best: Rhymes work all the time, and this post is sublime

It can be hard to balance professionalism and fun on professional social media accounts. Taking advantage of the shape of their state, Michigan Dems have won my heart with this Valentines Day card. The perfect amount of cringe and clever rhymes culminates into an adorable post that will bring a laugh to the coldest hearts (and I mean this literally, Michigan is freezing.)

Yes, just yes: Doug does it again

Find yourself a man like Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff. I adore the Second Gentleman’s Valentine’s Day post celebrating his love for Vice President Kamala Harris because of how genuine it is. These two prove that you do not have to be in your twenties to find your forever person.

Worst: Skills include Microsoft Paint

Texas State Senator Lois Kolkhorst celebrated her beloved husband with a testament to her skills with what I assume is Microsoft Paint? The crooked lines, the difference in opaqueness because she used the highlighter tool and the avant-gardism in the point of the heart is just a masterclass in graphic design. Perhaps the Texas State Senator should spend less of her time on Microsoft Paint and spend more of it making it easier to vote in Texas.

Dear Lord: GOP does not have a Valentine and wants everyone to know

The GOP dampens the mood once again. Republicans act like just because there is a Democrat in the White House, they have no responsibility whatsoever about the state of our nation. We are in a period of inflation; everything is more expensive— GOP, stop being so dramatic— people can still celebrate Valentine’s Day.

P.S.   The U.S. Commerce Department has shown that corporate profit margins are the largest they’ve been in 70 years, but ask Republicans if Democrats had anything to do with that.

Bad, so bad: I heart taking advantage of underpaid workers

Let me say this first, I do believe in the idea of capitalism, but it would never include it in my  valentine. Turning Point USA, never one to hold back from voicing their opinion, is in love with a system that shamelessly takes advantage of underpaid workers. Also, we need to talk about how brutal this graphic is to look at—  the Queen of Hearts wants her color scheme back.
