Get off Twitter and enjoy the cherry blossoms

KATHRYN CHAVEZ: The Spring Break high is officially over and it's full steam ahead till the end of the semester. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and smelly tweens once again are flocking to DC to experience the nation's capital. While there were sadly no political tweets about the slap heard around the world at the Oscars, here are some of the best social media posts from the last few weeks.

Bad: GOP, this is R F S (really "freaking" stupid")

Newsflash GOP—  Supreme Court Justices don't have a nominal impact on how race and other social topics are taught in school. Why are y'all so scared of students learning an honest rendition of American history? My old American Girl Doll Addy books are better history lessons than the white-washed ones some GOP lawmakers want. Supreme Court Justice nominee Kentaji Brown Jackson  was actually asked if she thinks babies are racist. As if the comical questions from GOP senators weren't cringe enough, they follow it up with this tacky post. Once again, do better GOP.

Ted Cruz: The verdict on Ted Cruz is: No one likes you!

We are really at a place in our society where senators promote their side hustles at official senate hearings. Ted Cruz has become his own category of "what the heck" as he used the Senate’s Supreme Court nomination hearing to promote his sponsored podcast in his line of questioning: “A couple years ago I was doing my weekly podcast...”

Having side hustles is not uncommon for elected officials— whether they be speaking engagements, books, or podcasts— but they’re usually  not  promoted during their government day job. Donald Trump already used the White House to promote his own personal brand, and we see how well that went (not very). To Ted Cruz and any other GOP politician who saw Trump’s presidency as a green light to plug their podcast: don't.

Slay: Ohio State Senator rings the right tone

There is nothing more fun than seeing elected officials fully engaged with Gen Z! As a House intern, I know that answering the office phones is often an interesting experience. Still, especially at the state level, it is important to call your elected officials. Senator Hearcel Craig and his staff killed it with this Tik Tok trend set to Lady Gaga’s Telephone. The Tik Tok is both a reminder to call elected officials and highlights the fun nature of his office.  While he’s a bit late to the trend, he’s right on time for a government official. A special shout out to the guy in the red and blue striped tie— well done.

Good one: Funny but wrong

It is rare to see me offer a compliment to my own Congresswoman, Beth Van Duyne, but I have to give her credit— this is funny. While I do not appreciate any belittling of Covid 19 and its effects on the American people, this tweet is a perfectly articulated  joke and punchline. It is like the person put in charge of removing the old Covid informational signs from a Democratic Member of Congress's office was purposefully trying to set up the perfect Twitter burn. This post is a reminder that we often need to be able to find the humor in what is going on. A joke at one's own expense can often lighten the load. So, thanks, Beth.

Best: Eau de Gasoline

Yes, this is the verified Eric Trump Instagram account, and yes, it's actually a quality joke. Eric was not the one to make this meme, but he decided to share it with his 2.3 million followers to joke about the expensive gas prices. And the meme is right— gas prices are expensive. Each time I get gas, I grow a little sadder. But, well done, Eric, for posting something everyone can laugh at.
